To comply with the government-mandated Enhanced Community Quarantine (ECQ), BPI has kept select branches open for clients’ basic banking needs, while observing skeleton staffing and shortened banking hours.
BPI took this opportunity to encourage the use of its digital channels. By adapting to digital banking, BPI customers are able to better follow ECQ guidelines while doing their transactions online from the comfort of their own homes. Registrations for BPI’s online services surged by 27% in the two weeks following the ECQ declaration, and the number of digital transactions performed daily have grown exponentially.
This digital boom and the millions of new users have not gone unnoticed by cybercriminals who are keen to take advantage of the situation. COVID-19-themed phishing and vishing scams have proliferated.
To counteract these cyber criminals, BPI has intensified its cybersecurity campaign to inform users of fraud tactics and to remind them that cybersecurity is a shared responsibility. BPI has also bolstered its digital security infrastructure and tools, particularly with the launch of the Mobile Key for the BPI Mobile app to give users an alternative to the One-Time PIN (OTP), which is often the target of scammers.
